Vertigo
To help fix the lightheadedness and build back some of that "roller coaster" resilience, you can try these three types of exercises:
1. Fix the "Loose Crystals" (Brandt-Daroff)
Since you mentioned dizziness when moving left or right in bed, this exercise helps by repeatedly moving any loose crystals so they either get stuck back in place or your brain learns to ignore the signal.
- The Move: Sit on the edge of your bed. Turn your head 45 degrees to the right. Quickly lie down on your left side (so your head is still turned slightly up). Stay for 30 seconds. Sit back up for 30 seconds. Repeat on the other side.
- Routine: Do 5 repetitions in a row, twice a day. Note: This will make you dizzy at first; that is actually how it works to "toughen" your brain.
2. "Gaze Stabilization" (Gaze Fixing)
This trains your eyes to stay locked on a target even when your head moves—exactly what you need for fast rides or quick turns.
- The Move: Hold a card with a single letter (like "X") at eye level. Keep your eyes locked on the letter while you slowly shake your head "no" (side to side).
- Routine: Gradually increase your head speed while keeping the letter in sharp focus. If it gets blurry, slow down. Try this for 1 minute, 3 times a day.
3. "Vestibular Habituation" (Desensitization)
To get back to feeling like you're in your 30s, you have to "practice" the movements that bother you.
- Walking with Head Turns: While walking in a safe hallway, slowly turn your head to the left on one step and to the right on the next.
- Toss a Ball: Gently toss a soft ball from hand to hand above eye level while standing. This forces your eyes and inner ear to coordinate quickly.
"Tips & Tricks" for Recovery
- Hydration is Key: Many people in their 40s experience worse vertigo simply because they are dehydrated. Drinking enough water can significantly reduce "motion headaches".
- Safety First: When starting these, always have a chair or wall nearby. These exercises are designed to make you feel slightly dizzy to "re-train" the brain, so don't do them right before driving.
- Consistency: It usually takes about 2 to 6 weeks of daily practice to notice a major change in how your head feels during movement.
